Smaller Can Be A Good Thing, Even In Texas! Part 1: Grapevine

We've all heard that everything is bigger and better in Texas: big hair, big steaks, big ranches, big guns, and big cities. However, if you only visit the big Texas cities you'll miss out on discovering some real Lone Star heart and soul. Grapevine, Frisco, and Irving are three smaller, distinctly different, road-trip worthy getaways that are all just about a 30-minute drive from Dallas.

As a travel writer, I often take trips with other journalists, a girlfriend, a significant other or perhaps it's just little ol' me. Each has its own set of pros and cons, however, more and more I've come to appreciate the freedom of traveling alone. It's blissful to be the only decision maker. You can skip breakfast and sleep in 'till noon or get up before dawn to take in the sunrise.

Shout out to all Dirty Dancing film fans: Mark Your Calendars now for the August 18-19th Dirty Dancing Festival held in Lake Lure, North Carolina. If you're thinking, "But wait, aren't we in September now?" you'd be right. However, I'm giving you advance notice for 2018 because you're not the only one who's down for "having the time of your life". There are well over 1,000 other fans who want to relive Dirty Dancing alfresco on the big screen, humming, singing or dancing along to the timeless songs.

You know how people who've met President Bill Clinton often say he has a way of making you feel as though you're the only one in the room. I feel the same way about Charlotte, NC. Its Southern charm is palpable and whenever I visit I'm treated like royalty. I suspect it's not just me, but everyone who visits this hospitable town will leave slightly besotted by "The Queen City".
