Janice Nieder

Culinary Tourism Writer

Janice Nieder could be the love child of Indiana Jones and Julia Child. She was a specialty food consultant in NYC with a client list that included Tavern on the Green and Dean & Deluca. A culinary trendsetter, Janice has visited over 90 countries in search of gastronomic adventures. She might be found sharing a smoked monkey dinner with Shuar Indians in the Amazon jungle or "running with the dogs" while truffle hunting in Marche, Italy. To keep things in balance, Janice also writes about her Girlfriend Getaways, including everything from luxurious city penthouses and Michelin starred meals to bespoke travel in remote destinations.

1. Why travel writing?

Because it so doesn't suck! Whether I'm luxuriating in a rose-petal strewn hot tub, sipping champagne under flickering tiki lamps at my private beachside bungalow or trekking through Assam in hopes of spying a Royal Bengal Tiger, I'm continually pinching myself to make sure this is all not just a dream.

2. If you weren't a writer what would you be?

Either an anthropologist or child psychologist.

3. Favorite destination visited so far?

4. If money wasn't an object, where would you go on your dream trip?

Irian Jaya.

5. Favorite method of travel: plane, train, automobile/other... why?

Oh, come on... has anyone in the last 20 years ever answered plane? My favorite method is walking. Even though I'm severely directionally-challenged and spend half of my life "lost," I love just walking around a new place and soaking up the local scene.

6. Favorite travel resource you refer to (site, blog, magazine, etc.)?

I have hot list of about 20 ranging from Afar to Timeout. As a foodie, my new fav is, which is similar to Airbnb, except you are dining in people's homes around the world.

7. Most unforgettable travel memory?

Teaching a local village boy in Southern Ethiopia how to brush his teeth for the first time, desperately trying to pantomime that you're supposed to spit out the tasty white toothpaste and not swallow it.

8. Your favorite travel find (hole in the wall, diamond in the rough)?

Newfoundland. I recently spent a week there and never saw another American. The people, food, countryside and glaciers were magnificent.

9. Fill in the blank: Happiness is getting bumped up to first class on my next international flight.

10. Favorite quote?

Susan Sontag - 'I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list.'

11. Who is a person you would like to have coffee with?

Alive: Bill Clinton. Deceased: Margaret Mead.

12. If someone was going to play you in a movie who would it be?

Julianne Moore.
